Why a simple log is enough

A small business does not need a sales pipeline with stages and forecasts. It needs an honest answer to one question: what did I sell, to whom, and when? Five fields per sale answer that. Anything more turns into a form nobody fills in, and a log nobody fills in tells you nothing at the end of the year.

What you can read off it

Three things show up quickly once a few months are in. Your best month, which is rarely the one you would have guessed. Your best customer, measured in money rather than in how often they email you. And the quiet months, which matter most: seeing last year go quiet in the same weeks is the difference between planning for it and being surprised by it again.

When you have outgrown this

This is a log, not accounting software and not a CRM. Once you need recurring subscriptions, stock levels, multiple currencies in one report, or a bookkeeper working in the same file as you, that is the point to move to real accounting software. Until then, the lighter thing that you actually keep up to date beats the complete thing you abandon in March.

Frequently asked questions

Should I include invoiced sales or only cash that has landed?

Include invoiced sales, not just cash received. This log tracks what you sold in a period, whether or not payment has arrived. Use your invoice payment tracker to see what is still outstanding.

Can I delete a sale after logging it?

Yes. Click the remove button on the row. The totals update immediately. If you are fixing an error, delete the wrong entry and retype it correctly.

What if I give a discount or refund on a sale?

Log it as a negative amount on a separate line, or reduce the amount on the original line. The tool totals whatever you enter, so a refund can be recorded as a reduced amount or as a deduction from revenue.

Why does the tool ask for quantity and unit price separately instead of just a total?

Separating them lets you spot trends in volume versus pricing. If your best month had high volume at low price versus high price at low volume, that detail matters for forecasting and strategy.

Can I see my total sales by product or service?

This tool groups by month and by customer only. If you need to see sales by product, add it to the “What you sold” column and then manually sort the downloaded CSV by that column in a spreadsheet.
